2006 is going to be an exciting year for the Victoria Baths. Over the coming months, there will be a string of events culminating in September with high profile celebrations to mark the 100 anniversary of the opening. In October, restoration work will begin, concentrating on the front block of the building.

The facade will be fully restored and building made secure from the elements. The restoration team will attempt to fix a number of major problems inside the building, including corrosion steel elements. A detailed investigation will be done to uncover any further problems. One major job is the repair of the clock turret, which will probably be removed entirely and completely rebuilt. Around October, the first evidence people will see of the work will be scaffolding which will cover the building.
The search for a new function for the Victoria Baths will take a step forward during 2006 when companies and organisations will be invited to submit proposals. There should be some interesting ideas, with all kinds of possibilities.
It’s an agreed aim of all stakeholders involved to have the swimming pool and Turkish Baths back in in operation. There will almost certainly be a cafe or restaurant, with displays of historical artifacts collected by the Friends of the Victoria Baths - the group who have spearheaded restoration of the baths since it closed in 1993.
No decisions have been taken yet, but it is hoped that by early 2007, the future of the Baths will look more certain.
For the time being, the Victoria Baths continues to be a major attraction in Manchester, with a busy programme of open days, arts events, and lots more things yet to be revealed.
Today, Sunday 2 April was the first open day of the year. It was very well attended, as ever, with a great atmosphere, despite the chilly temperature inside.
All those who love the Victoria Baths still long for the day when will be able to walk in the front entrance, pay their money and go for a swim in the pool, enjoy a session in the Turkish Baths, and maybe get something to eat in the cafeteria. That day is still a long way off but by the end of 2006 it should be one step closer.
