Stuck in M6 jam after two fatal accidents

It is 1.53am, and I am stuck in a traffic jam on the M6 motorway around 30 miles south of Manchester after two fatal accidents earlier in the evening blocked the motorway.

According to BBC radio reports I heard on the car radio, first there was an accident on the northbound section between J17 Sandbach and J18 Holmes Chapel, followed by another between J16 at Stoke-on-Trent and J17.

There is nowhere to go. If only I had come off at J15. Looks like I will just have to sit it out, possibly for the rest of the night. Spare a thought for the victims and their families. To pass the time, I am listening to Radio 5 Live and using the internet.

Night traffic jam after accidents on the M6

We were given permission to proceed by the police at 4.30am. Passing the accident scene, I saw several trucks were badly damaged, the cab of one was completely destroyed. Still had to leave the M6 at Junction 17 due to the other accident, and so took the A500 and A34 back to Manchester, where I arrived at 5.30am.

More info on the accidents on the BBC News website, which includes a quote from me.
