Local MP Andrew Gwynne is campaigning to save Denton and Reddish South railway stations, which are now threatened with closure.

The plan is to provide them with a service - using existing lines - from Stockport to Manchester Victoria. The current weekly service goes to Stalybridge. A park and ride facility could be opened at the M60/M67/A57 junction in Denton, with possibly a smaller ‘local’ facility at Reddish South.

Visit www.andrewgwynne.labour.co.uk for more details.

I’ve also been contacted by members of the Save the Train campaign group www.savethetrain.org.uk and have signed their petition to No 10 Downing Street to protect train services around Bristol.

Sign the petition at petitions.pm.gov.uk/wessextrains/.

Many miles of disused railway lines criss cross the Manchester conurbation. Most were abandoned in the 60s, some as late as the 80s. I’ve written an article about how I imagine I can still hear the sound of steam trains travelling along them.

Click to read the article: The sound of steam trains can still be heard across south Manchester and Stockport.
