Neil Roland is one of the foremost photographers in Manchester, though he prefers to call himself a photographic artist. The description is entirely justified as his pictures are more than just photographs, they are works of art.
His primary subject is the architecture of Manchester, and in many of his pictures, architectural details, captured in separate images, are placed side by side, with a linking feature, such as a colour or texture.
In one picture, red post boxes of varying colours and styles are arranged in tall slim images of varying widths. In another, elements from the Manchester streetscape, all green, are arranged in a pattern, each a separate print mounted with in an art frame.
The effect of the unifying colour is striking. You might imagine that some Photoshop manipulation has taken place, but Neil uses only film and there is absolutely no digital alteration.
In another series, produced in sepia monochrome, unclothed models are posed within an architectural or outdoor setting. The effect is restrained, subtle and artistic.
All works consist of genuine photographic prints, framed under glass. They’re all for sale in limited editions at prices which are not as expensive as you might think.
They need to be seen properly to be appreciated. His pictures are on show at Suburb coffee bar on Deansgate.
Eye On Manchester wholeheartedly recommends the work of Neil Roland. He is a groundbreaking and inspiring artist, and I’m sure his work will gain in value in the future.
