There have been a number of search requests concerning the Peter Saville Original Modern ’summing up’ of Manchester, and people have been asking questions:
Why isn’t the slogan widely used, like the Leeds ‘Live it love it’ or Glasgow ‘Smiles Better’?
Why isn’t the logo widely used?
Clues to the answers can be found in a lengthy interview with Peter Saville, published on the www.mad.co.uk website, which also displays an example of the little-used ‘M’ logo.
As I understand it, here are the main points:
Peter Saville has produced not a logo or slogan, but a ‘road map’ towards a better understanding of Manchester, and a ‘target’ for the city to aspire to.
In Peter’s opinion cities suffer from ’sloganitis’. Use of a slogan suggests that a slogan is needed and that there are problems: Glasgow and Leeds do, London and Paris don’t.
Consequently, the ‘original modern’ and ‘M’ branding will not be released for general use, but will be used ‘when appropriate’ as a ’signifier’ and on ‘exemplars’.

To see a website which sets out Manchester’s achievements and ‘claims to fame’, though without the use of Peter Saville’s M logo, visit www.manchesterfacts.com.
Peter’s branding is also currently absent from the Manchester International Festival website, though I understand the festival, taking place next year, will be used to disseminate his ideas.
Since I wrote this post, the Original Modern words and design have appeared around the centre of Manchester, a fact which seems to contradict the words by Peter Saville quoted here. Keep visiting Eye On Manchester for more updates on this theme.
