Local tv and fashion meet at Urbis Manchester
There’s plenty happening at Urbis at the moment.
The Little Black Dress exhibition traces the origins of one of fashion’s most iconic garment’s from its earliest origins to the present day.
Throughout the exhibition, there are notes explaining Manchester’s key role in the cotton and garment industry, a status that’s all but forgotten today.
As well as photographs, books, posters and a set of 30 black dresses provided especially for the exhibition, visitors can see an entire screening of the movie Breakfast at Tiffany’s, starring Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant. A series of accompanying events continues the theme, and relates it to current developments in the fashion industry.
Little Black Dress will be of great interest to anyone interested in the development of fashion, fashion photography and other media representations. It’s great value at only £3.
It also helps to enhance further the status of Urbis, a project which has come in for some criticism due to cost, but has seen increasing visitor numbers since Scott Burnham took over as creative director, and the entrance fee was dropped.
By drawing the glamorous world of fashion, and the people involved in it, into the heart of the city, Urbis is helping to steal some of London’s thunder and raise the profile of Manchester on the world stage.
Meanwhile, downstairs in the lobby, Channel M are installing their television production facilities. As well as a museum, Urbis will become a broadcasting centre, where people can look behind the scenes and watch real live television being made.
Even if Urbis costs a few extra pounds per year on the council tax, EOM thinks it’s worth paying, as it’s a cultural and educational facility that’s unique in the world. Some people would like to get rid of Urbis, and this may yet happen, depending on how people vote in the upcoming local elections.
The Urbis Little Black Dress exhibition is on until 21 May 2006. More info at www.urbis.org.uk.
