Manchester City Council and other Greater Manchester councils are openly looking at the possibility of imposing a congestion charge on local drivers.

Senior Labour councillor on Manchester City Council Sir Richard Leese said on radio today that the scheme was only intended to keep the traffic moving and would be for the benefit of drivers, but massive opposition has been expressed by the public.

Full details of the proposals in the article on Manchester Online by David Ottewell.

Eye On Manchester says: The traffic congestion we see today is largely a result of Manchester’s poor quality and unintegrated public transport system. No congestion charge would be necessary if public transport were as good as it is in Germany or Japan. There is no congestion charge in Tokyo or Munich, and neither should there be one in Manchester.
