Manchester Airport opinionated mini-guide

Manchester Airport is Britain’s most centrally located major airport, and is third busiest by numbers of passengers after London Heathrow and London Gatwick.

Many people still refer to it by its original name Ringway. Passengers from the whole of the north of England, and some from further away, fly in and out of Manchester Ringway Aiport.

It’s a major regional asset. The controversial Second Runway has been open since 2002.

One of the Concorde aircraft, taken out of service by British Airways in 2003, has been located in the Aviation Viewing Park and can be visited on one of the pre-booked tours.

  1. David Bradly says:

Many years after trying to abolish the name Ringway, the airport was seeking ideas for a new name, how ironic, the twits have come full circle. Ringway is the name from the pioneering days of flying and has an emotional factor as does the name Heathrow (not yet abolished). I still call it Ringway but I also still say Corn Exchange. Who knows maybe these names will come back one day when Mr Bland retires.

  2. Aidan O'Rourke says:

It is always a mistake to drop a name that is well used and has good connotations. Mention the name ‘Ringway’ and immediately I think of the silvery jets, whirring turboprops and throbbing piston-engined planes of the 1960s. It’s a great name, and should be celebrated.
