Civic leaders at Salford City Council are reported to be outraged at the decision to rename Barton Aerodrome ‘Manchester City Airport’ – possibly following the example of London City Airport. (MEN 15 March 2007 page 5)

They say that Barton is ‘in Salford’ and so should be named Salford City Airport.

However, Barton is not in Salford, it’s in the City of Salford, Eccles to be exact, which since 1974 has been part of the City of Salford. There is often confusion the old and new ‘Salford’.

The old city of Salford is the area to the west of the Irwell and Manchester city centre.

The new City of Salford comprises previously independent municipalities including Eccles, Swinton and Walkden and others which in 1974 were amalgamated with the old city of Salford.

There are good commercial reasons why an airport should be known by the conurbation it serves, not by one district of it.

While local politicians still have arguments over local names, territory and boundaries, the Manchester conurbation – which includes Salford – will never achieve its full potential.
