Today’s ‘Picture of the Day’, is a zoom telephoto zoom of the Beetham Tower facade, seen from Whitworth Street West.
Workmen are putting up another Hilton Hotels illuminated sign, here on the south facade next to the south east corner of the buidling.
The date is 30 September 2006. The hotel should have been fully open but there have been unexpected delays. In recent evenings, some some of the windows have been illuminated, but the building is not yet fully operational.
It’s around three years since construction on the former railway arch site first began.
The red warning lights on the tower are visible for miles around. Here’s an enlargement of one of them, located just below and between the new Hilton signs.
The Beetham tower sticks out like an oversized tooth. It has no affinity with its surrounding architecture and for all the media plaudits most Mancunians I speak to think it is ugly and out of place. Why can’t the media say what we all really think?
