2007 begins with news of more demolition
2007 has begun with news of more buildings to be demolished in the local area
Built in 1931 and closed in 2004, the former Odeon Manchester is to disappear later this year.
That’s the news contained in the newsletter of the 20th Century Society, which I received today.
Other buildings about to bite the dust are the most-unchurchlike but very distinctive United Reformed Church on Trafford Rd Salford, and the former Odeon cinema in Bury.
I’ve written an article outlining why I think the demolition of the former Odeon cinema is bad news for Manchester. Online shortly.
Thanks to Eddy Rhead, editor of the newsletter of the 20th Century Society North West Group. He is also writes for the Manchester Civic Society newspaper Forum and is very knowledgeable about buildings, particularly those from the 20th century.
See some of Eddy’s comments in my Manchester photo portfolio.
